| | | | Creator: | Morgan, John | | | | Dates: | 1788-1801 | | | | Abstract: | John Morgan was a Hartford, Connecticut resident who, along with John Caldwell and Jonathan Brace, was one of the original trustees of the Connecticut Land Company. The deed of trust to them from the 35 company proprietors was the original title source to most of the property in the Connecticut Western Reserve, the area in what is now northeastern Ohio consisting of over 3 million acres which was bought by the company on credit in 1795 for $1.2 million. The collection consists of contracts, agreements, and quitclaim deeds pertaining to land in the Western Reserve. Parties involved in the transactions include John Morgan, Daniel L. | | | | Creator: | Pease, Calvin | | | | Dates: | 1798-1841 | | | | Abstract: | Calvin Pease (1776-1839) was a lawyer, legislator and judge, of Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio, in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Pease came to the Western Reserve from Connecticut in 1800. He was admitted to the bar and was appointed the first clerk of the court of quarter sessions, a position he held until 1803. He served as judge of the Third Circuit, Court of Common Pleas (1803-1810), and justice of the Ohio Supreme Court (1816-1830). Pease also served as a tax collector, primarily in Trumbull County, from 1801-1819. He served in the Ohio state legislature from Trumbull County, and also was the official agent for the U.S. postmaster-general in northeastern Ohio. He was a delegate to the canal convention meeting in Warren in 1833. Pease continued the private practice of law until his death at Warren in 1839. | | | | Creator: | Perkins Family | | | | Dates: | 1823-1937 | | | | Abstract: | Joseph and Jacob Perkins were sons of Simon Perkins, general land agent in the Western Reserve. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. Also included are photographs, diaries, trip journals, correspondence from Simon and Nancy Perkins, financial journals, ledgers and account books of Stephen E. | | | | Creator: | Harper, Alexander Family | | | | Dates: | 1755-1935 | | | | Abstract: | Alexander Harper, a Revolutionary War officer, brought his family to settle in Ashtabula County, Ohio (then a part of the Western Reserve) in 1798. The settlement was named Harpersfield by the family after their hometown in New York. After Alexander Harper's death in September 1798, his widow Elizabeth Harper was joined in 1799 by Alexander's brother Joseph and by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Aaron Wheeler. Elizabeth's children; William, Elizabeth, John A., James A., Alexander, and Robert, all became prominent members of the community. In 1814, the Harpers were among those who organized the Harpersfield Commercial Company. Most prominent of the Harper brothers was Robert, who married Polly Hendry in 1815 and began construction of the family homestead, Shandy Hall. Robert was a lawyer, farmer, businessman, Superintendent of the Public Works at Cunningham Creek, and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. His nephew, Rice Harper, was also a prominent lawyer and businessman, and was involved in the Ohio Rail Road Company with his uncle. Robert Harper's daughter Ann moved to Sandusky, Ohio, shortly after her marriage to Dr. Aaron Austin. His eldest daughter Ellen lived at Shandy Hall with her youngest sister Jane and Jane's husband, Alexander J. Harper. The last owners of Shandy Hall were Stella and Ann Harper, the two daughters of Alexander and Jane Harper. After the death of Ann Harper in 1935, the property was maintained by the David Z. Norton family, cousins of the Harpers. In 1948, the Norton family donated Shandy Hall to the Western Reserve Historical Society.
